No, I was not an athlete. No, I did not tear my ACL. No, my parents are not physicians.
Yet here I am. An orthopedic surgeon. Standing five foot nothing, I will fix your bones, replace your joints, reduce your dislocations. And Yes, I a woman.
I spent about an hour this morning searching for a blog targeted to women in orthopedics. While there are blogs dedicated to women in medicine and mothers in medicine, I found that many of the challenges I face are unique to orthopedics and surgical specialities. Women continue to comprise around 10% of orthopedic surgeons. It remains one of the most male dominated fields in all of medicine. I love my job and the people I work with, however I find myself searching for a little extra community, a little more mentorship, and a little something more outside of orthopedics. Isn't there anyone who just wants to talk about being a chick who is a surgeon and works with a bunch of dudes?
I'm now a senior orthopedic resident and waiting to match into fellowship. Residency led me to a cross country move, a break up that was a long time coming, dating during residency, meeting and marrying the man of my dreams, buying a house and getting two crazy bulldogs. My hope is to start a platform to discuss issues women in surgery face. I'll write about some of my experiences, both in and out of residency. I'm happy to take questions and post guest submissions. Let's build a community together.
