No, I was not an athlete. No, I did not tear my ACL. No, my parents are not physicians. Yet here I am. An orthopedic surgeon. Standing five foot nothing, I will fix your bones, replace your joints, reduce your dislocations. And Yes, I a woman. I spent about an hour this morning searching for a blog targeted to women in orthopedics. While there are blogs dedicated to women in medicine and mothers in medicine, I found that many of the challenges I face are unique to orthopedics and surgical specialities. Women continue to comprise around 10% of orthopedic surgeons. It remains one of the most male dominated fields in all of medicine. I love my job and the people I work with, however I find myself searching for a little extra community, a little more mentorship, and a little something more outside of orthopedics.
